SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 17. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife will launch, within the framework of the Insular Agricultural Training Plan, a specific program for women in the primary sector in which courses will be offered for manipulating phytosanitary products and handling agricultural machinery, training aspects in which female participation is, so far, considerably lower than that of men.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, and the Island Director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Cayetano Silva, have presented the main actions in terms of equality of the Technical Service for Agriculture and Rural Development.
Javier Parrilla explained that the actions “are aimed at strengthening female leadership in rural areas, promoting a more balanced presence and more active participation of women to give visibility to the important role they play in the socioeconomic development of the rural settings”.
On the other hand, this March, actions for the dissemination of audiovisual materials and awareness and information on equality in the educational field will be launched. The counselor advanced that special emphasis will be placed on dismantling gender stereotypes related to the primary sector and rural areas, as well as the importance of having female role models.
In this context, the documentary ‘Como Ella Miles’, by Canarian director Estrella Monterrey Viña, will be premiered, in whose production the Technical Service for Agriculture and Rural Development has participated. It will take place on March 24 in the auditorium of the Cultural Center of Alcalá, in collaboration with the City Council of Guía de Isora.
For his part, Cayetano Silva pointed out that several meetings have been held in educational centers on the Island with the aim of collecting documentation on the questions and concerns of adolescents.
“This is a pilot project with which we intend to develop a learning guide. The guide will be made available to teachers on the Agrocabildo website and on other educational platforms, and even schools that so wish may request the organization of a talk based on this didactic material”, he pointed out.
In addition to the courses, within the framework of the AGROFEM project, in cooperation with Senegal and the University of La Laguna, activities for the exchange of experiences and networking will be carried out with Senegalese farmers and entrepreneurs from the rural area of Tenerife. The meetings of rural entrepreneurs stand out, which will take place in June and October, and the celebration of the AGROFEM fair in Tenerife, in which the initiatives developed by women from the rural environment will have a leading role.
Throughout the year, it is also planned to prepare materials for awareness, information and guidance in the incorporation of content related to equality in the field of agri-food companies on the island. These actions will make it possible to consolidate compliance with the provisions of Royal Decree 6/2019 on urgent measures to guarantee equal treatment and opportunities between women and men in employment and occupation, and Royal Decree 901/2020, which regulate equality plans and their registration.
