SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 16. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands has published a guide of recommendations for the use of applications, platforms and digital technologies in matters of personal data protection, which is aimed at non-university public educational centers.

The head of the Department, Manuela Armas, who presented this tool in the company of the general director of Planning, Innovation and Quality, Gregorio Cabrera, pointed out that it is “a resource of enormous interest that has been highly demanded by the educational community and, especially , after the boom in the use of digital tools in recent times, to ensure their proper use”.

For his part, Gregorio Cabrera indicated that this material is part of the Plan for Digital Education in the Canary Islands in the 21st Century, while responding to data protection legislation. “The educational community was already using technological tools and the Internet before the norm existed and it was necessary to address their use,” he pointed out. Also, as he commented, the guide provides resources to deal with possible dangers to which students may be exposed in the use of electronic means, guaranteeing safe use.

The material includes a description of the fundamental concepts with which the centers and teachers must become familiar in order to make proper use and treatment of the personal data of the members of the educational community, with special reference to the concept of personal data and who is responsible and those in charge of them.

In addition, guidance is offered on the use of digital technologies that the Ministry makes available to management teams, teachers, students and families and, finally, recommendations on the use of third-party applications, in order to avoid risks and threats. that affect the digital rights and guarantees contemplated in the current regulations of those who make up the educational community.

The right to data protection was already included in the 1978 Constitution, the European Regulation and the Organic Law on Protection of Personal Data and Guarantee of Digital Rights. Likewise, the new framework of digital teaching competence emphasizes the need to ensure safe and responsible use of technologies, which concerns management teams, teachers and students.

In parallel, the new Education Law, the LOMLOE, states that the educational administrations and the management teams of the centers must promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the classroom as a didactic means to carry out carry out teaching and learning tasks in a safe environment that minimizes risk situations, in particular if personal data is provided or that of others when using the technologies.

The regulations have been changing over the last few years and this directly affects the centers in the performance of their work, which frequently show doubts about the interpretation and application of these regulations.

For this reason, the Ministry has prepared and made available to educational centers these recommendations, which will guide teachers and management teams in the use of digital technologies, in accordance with the law, both in the administrative management of centers, as in the field of communications between the agents of the educational community, as well as in the use of platforms and applications for the teaching-learning process.

During his speech, the director general highlighted the joint work that has made it possible to prepare this resource, in which the staff of the Educational Technology Area have participated, as well as the Data Protection delegates, who depend on the General Secretariat Department and the Vice-Ministry of Education, Universities and Sports, “in such a way that we have collaborated with the widest possible perspective”.
