SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 14. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Today, Monday, the Cabildo de Tenerife has activated, preventively and due to adverse meteorological phenomena, the Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN), since the Government of the Canary Islands has decreed alert situations due to wind and coastal phenomena on the Island, as well as pre-alert for snowfall at levels of 1,500 meters above sea level.

“The weather situation on the island and especially in the summit areas is being complicated today,” said the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, who added that ensuring the safety of citizens “we have proceeded to activate the Plan of Insular Emergencies, to be prepared if necessary and mobilize those resources that are needed”.

The president added that the presence of gusts of wind exceeding 130 kilometers per hour at some points on the island’s peaks, along with poor visibility and low temperatures, “indicate that the most logical thing is to proceed with preventive measures that guarantee the absolute security of the citizenry”.

Regarding coastal phenomena, Martín recalled that the Municipal Emergency Plans are almost all activated and that in some towns, such as Garachico, the road has already been closed.

This activation of the PEIN contemplates three main measures, namely, the suspension of outdoor activities in the geographical scope of the alerts, the revocation of authorizations for use in the natural environment, such as camping areas, crossings through protected natural spaces or use of recreational areas, and the limitation of access to the Teide National Park.

Regarding the latter, the TF-21 highways will be closed at the height of Ramón Caminero, TF-24 at its confluence with the TF-523 and TF-21 at the height of the Cable Car, starting at 5:00 p.m. from today. However, there is a possibility that these cuts will be enabled earlier, if there is ice or snow on the road. These measures will be maintained while the Insular Plan is activated.
