Red Cross has attended to 243 Ukrainians who were as tourists in Tenerife on February 24, day of the Russian invasion of their country, and they have become refugees because they cannot return. The figure represents an increase with respect to the initial calculation of 170 people made by the Ukrainian residents on the island. About twenty were housed a few days ago at the Catalonia Punta del Rey hotel in Las Caletillas (Candelaria). Of this total of 243, 116 in a vulnerable situation have been received in temporary accommodation resources managed by the organization, of which 35 are minors.
The Red Cross is in charge of the transfer, lodging, maintenance and coverage of basic needs after analyzing if they have a social support network. In addition, they are provided with psychosocial care, healthcare and medication coverage, as well as Spanish language classes. Likewise, next week the organization of recreational activities with children is planned.
Red Cross makes a appeal to raise funds to meet humanitarian needs of the affected population in Ukraine and neighboring countries (www.cruzroja.es). In addition, they have the lost family contact recovery service.
a day later
Since last February 25, one day after the war began, the Red Cross has provided assistance to these Ukrainians. They were in Tenerife for a while and cannot return to their country. They have requested information on international protection and asylum applications. The accommodation of another ten more is planned during the next few days. Likewise, another 14 have not required this benefit as they have a social support network on the Island, although they have required aid to cover basic needs such as maintenance, cards for purchases in supermarkets, different deliveries of goods, optics, and so on.
The organization has made its entire network of assemblies on the island available to Ukrainians who require support. First of all, they are offered information of interest about their legal situation and the entities that are responsible for providing them with assistance. Then an assessment of needs is made to establish the aid criteria. These depend on whether they lack a social support network and their economic resources.
In the case of having a social network, they are referred to the assemblies closest to the municipality of residence for their inclusion in the Extreme Vulnerability program. Your basic needs are met here. Most of them have requested help through the Red Cross assemblies and the Regional Operations Center. A small percentage have arrived directly from the airport.
CC requests 300,000 euros
The CC-PNC group will present an amendment to the budgets of the Cabildo 2022 in which it will request 300,000 euros for the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) that provides aid to the people most affected by the war in Ukraine and Russia. The nationalist formation points out that it is necessary to “provide support to the NGOs that are on the ground together with the most disadvantaged”.
Good evening! I am trying to get a Ukrainian family in Tenerife who I have been in contact with help with local resources since they cannot return home. Can you kindly give me the name and contact information of the local IFRC liaison for them?
