Equality is our north

The Network of Municipalities for Gender Equality in the North of Tenerifemade up of the 15 towns located between Buenavista and Tacoronte, held this Tuesday, March 8, 2022, a public act in the Natural Park of El Montilloon The Massacre of Acentejo, to underline that, as its new motto says, “equality is our north”. The short film, with the students as actors and filmmakers, tells the story of a girl who suffers because her boyfriend conditions her way of dressing, taking care of herself and relating to others. A wake-up call against the first warning signs of toxic and sexist relationships that undermine the self-esteem of so many young women in the 21st century.

The mayors of Buenavista, Icod de los Vinos, San Juan de la Rambla, La Guancha, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Úrsula, La Victoria and La Matanza de Acentejo, who since last February assumed the secretariat of this regional group; as well as councilors from the rest of the local governments involved in the network: Los Silos, El Tanque, Garachico, Los Realejos, La Orotava, El Sauzal and Tacoronte.

The Councilor for Equality of La Matanza, Victoria Albertos Perez, read the network’s 8M manifesto, which was added to the institutional declaration issued by the Canarian Federation of Municipalities, and made a special mention “of the importance of education in enhancing the role of women in society and in their integral development as a person. Albertos stressed that “education, knowledge and culture are key to progress in effective equality between men and women, and a fundamental piece to eradicate sexual harassment, discrimination, gender violence and vicarious violence from society” .

The Island Councilor for Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Priscilla de Leon, recalled that the 8M «claims for more than a hundred years the defense of the rights of girls, adolescents and women in all areas, and commemorates the long history of sacrifices and struggles necessary to achieve the current rights ». And she underlined the Cabildo’s support for the United Nations objective of achieving “Gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow”and “the firm belief that the principle of equality and the gender perspective must be present in all spheres of action of public authorities and inspire all policies”.

The mayor of La Matanza, Ignatius Rodriguez, claimed the role of municipalities in the implementation of “real, clear and forceful measures” to eradicate discrimination, and the need to “move from declarations to actions”. He closed the act with a closed defense of “education, awareness, awareness and knowledge” as tools “to change things” because “only from equality can well-being and happiness be achieved in a society” ..
