With the same modesty and almost the same silence that governed the small municipality of Fasnia, Damián Pérez Viera announced yesterday his decision to leave the Mayor’s Office of his hometown, after 10 years and eight months in office, which he holds after winning the three municipal elections (2011, 2015 and 2019) with an absolute majority, under the initials of the PSOE.
The resignation was formalized yesterday at noon by registering at the Town Hall and, later, in a long day, he said goodbye to the municipal workers and his colleagues from the government group, although he will continue to be mayor until tomorrow’s plenary session (6:00 p.m. hours) becomes aware of his resignation and Luis Javier González Delgado assumes the position.
Damián Pérez, a professor who has been retired for seven years, achieved in 2011 something that few imagined, unseating the nationalist Pedro Hernández Tejera after 23 years as mayor. With quiet work, without fanfare, he was building a socialist government group that he has maintained until now and that he hopes “can be maintained thanks to the new blood that arrives, with people more prepared than me,” he said when asked about the reasons for his resignation. In addition, he wielded “being able to enjoy retirement with my family, which until now I have not been able to, and improve my health, which is falling into disrepair, now with the triggered tension,” said Damián Pérez, who will now enjoy his winery and his farm at the top of Fasnia, although he has never denied Los Roques, where he almost started in politics, after 35 years as a teacher, with the association of residents and vacationers of the coastal neighborhood that has given him so many headaches to a rehabilitation that is already under way.

Although he did not confirm it 100%, everything is ready for Luis Javier González Delgado, until now Councilor for Local Development, Youth and Equality and fifth on the 2019 electoral list, to be the substitute for Damián Pérez as head of the Mayor’s Office, something which will be made official tomorrow, after an agreement of the seven socialist councilors -the other four of the Consistory represent CC-, by giving up numbers 2, 3 and 4 on the list (Silvia Tejera Felipe, Juan Elías Cabrera and Raquel Díaz Cruz) to the Mayor’s Office and take the consensual candidate proposal to the plenary. “It is good that he resigns now so that fresh air can enter and people prepare for the elections in a year,” said Pérez Viera.
Luis Javier González Delgado has a law degree from the ULL and is a property manager. He is currently secretary general of the PSOE of Fasnia, after replacing Priscila de León in 2018, and is responsible for the Farmer’s Market in Los Roques.
