The members of formed the network that organized illegal dog fighting -a Local Police of Adeje, among others-, who were doped to make them more aggressive and subjected to “cruel mistreatment” from birth, and that was dismantled in 2017 in Tenerife they have faced the Justice this Monday in a macro trial. The Madrid Prosecutor’s Office has reached an agreement in accordance with 19 of the 23 accused before the recognition of the imputed crimes, which are belonging to a criminal organization, animal abuse and omission of the obligation to prosecute crimes.
A decision made by the courts that has saddened the animal groups who experienced the horror in the first person, even designating it as “the worst of nightmares”. And it is that numerous volunteers went to the areas where those involved organized the disputes between dogs – a chalet in Güímar and a farm in Arona – to rescue the 230 animals considered potentially dangerous. “They were bloodied and badly injured between dirt, drugs and pain, a lot of pain,” says one of the activists, who is terrified to think that if one of her pets is lost, it could end up in the hands of these “heartless.”
The animalists have shared with DIARIO DE AVISOS some unpublished images captured during the rescue in both Tenerife municipalities that show “the extreme mistreatment to which the dogs were subjected without compassion.” “They were infinitely terrified, wounded, cachectic and robbed of their families,” they add.
The platform Change.org has started a campaign calling for “justice for the fighting dogs of the Canary Islands and Madrid.” “We have been waiting for five years for the trial to be held and for the members of the criminal network to be tried for these events, during which time my dog has never lost the fear in his eyes,” says the promoter of the request, who is also one of the volunteers who currently has one of the affected animals in foster care.
The petition has obtained more than 18,000 signatures in just five days in a key week for the application of the law in defense of animals in our country.
