At 2:00 p.m. on the 28th, the non-extendable term granted by the Vice Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands to discharge the wastewater from the Valle de Güímar Industrial Estate into the sea expires. If it is not complied with, the Environmental Protection Agency will initiate a disciplinary proceeding against the municipalities of Candelaria, Arafo and Güímar. In parallel, the Polygon will be closed due to the impossibility of continuing with the activity of more than 200 companies, because it will not be able to generate wastewater as it does not have authorization to discharge into the sea.

These extremes were confirmed to El Día by the Deputy Minister for Ecological Transition of the Regional Executive, Miguel Ángel Pérez, after the technical meeting held yesterday between his department, the Arafo City Council –as the administration to which the municipalities of the Güímar Valley entrust their representation in this file–, the Insular Council of Waters of Tenerife (Ciatf) –body that is responsible for the execution of the industrial treatment plant– and the UTE that executes it.

Until the 28th, the parties agreed to apply a new three-week phased plan whereby, as of today, 78% of the wastewater from Polígono Valle de Güímar is discharged into the sea and 22% is transported in tankers to the industrial treatment plant of Polígono La Campana, a facility owned by the El Rosario City Council. In the week from the 14th to the 20th, the amount of water and mud to be deposited in the rosariero complex is raised to 25% and in the period from the 21st to the 28th that percentage must be reduced notably because the biological and physiochemical station of the industrial treatment plant in the Güímar Valley.

Yesterday the operation began, but the 28th is the last day that is authorized to deposit water and mud in La Campana and it is the date on which the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (Edari) of the Valle de Güímar Polygon must be in service. From there you can pour into the sea from said complex. The extension of the authorization until then will be official on Monday.
