Tenerife has 117 million euros for a major project that will help decongest traffic on the South highway and it will change the physiognomy of one of the points with the most tourist weight on the Island: Playa de Las Américas, in the part corresponding to the municipality of Adeje. The Council of Canary Islands Government In its meeting yesterday, it authorized this investment until 2025 for the tender for the drafting of the project and the execution of the works on the TF-1. The works will completely modify this section of the dream motorway: about three kilometers of the TF-1 will be buried with a cut-and-cover tunnel between Las Américas and Miraverde and the upper part will become a boulevard with accessible pedestrian walkways, bike lanes and areas green.
This new boulevard in this section of the motorway will allow traffic to be diverted through four junctions towards Playa de Las Américas, Torviscas and Fañabé. The cut-and-cover tunnel will start next to Siam Park and will end shortly before the X-Sur Shopping Center. The approval of the 117 million was made at the proposal of the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis. The contract for the execution of the works will have a term of 40 months once it is awarded, the regional Executive reported yesterday in a statement.
«This year the project and the work will be tendered and awarded; Another great news for Tenerife and the Canary Islands»
The reactions were immediate given the enormous impact that this action will have on the tourist lung of Tenerife. The President of the Government of the Canary Islands himself, Angel Victor Torres, wrote on his Twitter profile: «Approved in the Government Council of the Canary Islands the multi-year expenditure of the Variante TF-1 highway in Las Américas for 117 million euros. This same year the project and the work will be tendered and awarded; another great news for Tenerife and the Canary Islands».
The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (PSOE), assured yesterday that the announcement of the burying of part of the TF-1 and the creation of a boulevard is “great news that we had been waiting for some time”. For the president of Adejero, “this is an essential project to help solve part of the mobility problems in Tenerife and the South, so I am convinced that when it is finished it will improve the day-to-day life of thousands of drivers who use this via”.
“It will help to eliminate the kilometric queues that historically form in this area”
historical demand
In Fraga’s opinionthe project “will help to eliminate the kilometric queues that historically form in this area because it will drive fast traffic on one level and interior traffic on another.” «It is a historical demand of Adeje and the region that now will finally come true. It also puts an end to the problem that a motorway with its current characteristics has become a road for local use that splits our municipality in two and prevents permeability between the tourist area and the rest of the territory”, the mayor clarified. “We believe it is an important part of the solution to mobility problems and we congratulate the Canary Islands Government Public Works Department not only for the project, but also for the way in which they have decided to put it out to tender, a formula that will shorten the deadlines and which will make us see it completed very soon”, concludes Fraga.
The president of the Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of the South of Tenerife (CEST), Roberto Ucelay, also celebrated the announcement of “this great project that we have been waiting for a long time and that, in the long term, represents a very important solution for Adeje, the region South and Tenerife». Regarding its execution in the section of highway that crosses Adeje territory, Ucelay points out that it is limited to the area that orographically allows it and that, from the administrative point of view, it facilitates its execution “since it is a project that arises from the flight of the TF-1, which shortens its processing, and also allows to connect everything that has been lost in Adeje of the interior sections and the connectivity between urbanizations due to the pedestrianization of streets that once had two directions and to the growth of the municipality.
«The project is very important for Adeje, for the South region and for Tenerife»
Pending subjects
Ucelay welcomes this announcement but remember that for the CEST «the subject of the third rail of the TF-1 between San Isidro and the Playa de Las Américas junction is still pending, which has been laid out since 2012 and has not yet been put out to tender, despite being included in the Highway Agreement with the State.” In addition, he insists that the action that for the CEST is “the number one priority” in the South is “the solution to the serious traffic problem that is suffered in the ascent of the Guaza mountain, very localized in a section of about 2 kilometres, which generates large traffic jams in the morning and in the afternoon, hours when the highway is literally at a standstill».
Ucelay highlights that “in order to end the queues for the Guaza mountain climb, it is necessary to expand the TF-1 platform in that section, create a temporary third lane and reduce speed temporarily to carry out the work as already described. did in the section of Las Caletillas». It also raises “the need to connect the exterior roads of the El Mojón Partial Plan with the Los Cristianos-Guaza road so that part of the traffic will use this alternative and not the TF-1”. For the CEST, “much more important” than the announcement of that work of partial burial of the TF-1 and that the third lane is “to solve the problem of traffic jams on the ascent of the Guaza mountain, for which there is no not even a concrete project».
