SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 3. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Minister of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, Noemí Santana, presented this Thursday the institutional campaign of the Government of the Canary Islands on the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, and whose motto is ‘We play , we choose’.
As the counselor explained, “since childhood we can choose what we want to do and what to play with, that is why we are presenting a very specific campaign on March 8 in which we want to put the accent on the work that needs to be done from the childhood to deconstruct the social narrative imposed by patriarchy and build an egalitarian society”.
For her part, the director of the Canarian Institute for Equality (ICI), Kika Fumero, stated that although it may be strange that in the middle of March people are talking about toys, more typical of December, “the truth is that all the gaps and structural inequalities start from a base that is already generated from childhood by the way in which we interfere with and socialize our girls and boys through games, how they play or what kind of toys they choose”.
According to Kika Fumero, “interfering in his choice is putting obstacles and obstacles in the development of his personality and his personal abilities”. In this sense, she alluded to the vindictive spirit of the campaign, “because we give a voice to girls who demand their right to choose what they want to do and develop their own lives without interference,” she pointed out.
The Councilor for Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Priscila de León, who spoke on behalf of the seven Island Councils, highlighted the importance of this initiative because “the emphasis is placed on the education of our girls because they will be the women of the future, a future that we want with free women and with the capacity to choose,” she said.
‘We want to play without impositions to be free women. We play, we choose, and what are you playing at?’ It is the message that the girls protagonists of the institutional campaign on the occasion of March 8 send to society to claim new roles and occupy the space and leadership that corresponds to them. This year’s campaign will be broadcast from Thursday until March 13 through television ads, radio spots, digital press and social networks.
‘CANARY FEMINISM WITHOUT BORDERS’
On the other hand, the 8M Tenerife Feminist Platform will once again take to the streets of Santa Cruz on March 8 with a demonstration that will start at 7:00 p.m. from Plaza Weyler under the slogan ‘Canarian feminisms without borders. Free and diverse women. Rights for all’.
With this motto they want to vindicate inclusive and diverse feminisms, which fight for the rights of all women, breaking down physical and symbolic borders. Specifically, they focus their claims on the situation of migrants and all those women who, inside and outside the Canary Islands, are seeing their rights violated.
In the north of the island, the collective Jaira Feministas del Norte de Tenerife convenes for Monday, March 7 in Puerto de la Cruz, the potluck ‘Feminist Rebumbio for a dignified life’, which will depart at 6:00 p.m. from the Monument to the Fisherwoman from the port pier. And in the south, the 8M Sur Feminist Platform will convene two rallies for Tuesday, March 8: one in Arona, in the Los Cristianos Cultural Center square, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and another in Adeje, in the Plaza Tierra Lavada Los Olivos, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
