The municipal government of Arico “celebrates” that the Cabildo “corrects and discards the thermal treatments (pyrolysis, gasification and plasma) to eliminate 130,000 tons of waste per year”, a method “repeatedly defended by the island government and its advisor Javier Rodríguez, which, in addition, was included in the tender specifications to award the new waste plant.” But the concern persists in Primero Arico, CC and PP, because “they continue to bury almost 600,000 tons of garbage.”
The successful joint venture chooses to focus on recycling and treatment by biodegradation of organic matter, which is more beneficial for the environment and the municipality. The Consistory reminds that the Plenary of the Cabildo approved, with the votes of CC, PP and Si Podemos Canarias, suspending this tender “for including incineration” a system that the majority of society rejects, expressed in meetings with neighborhood associations and groups of the municipality as well as by the Arico City Council and environmental associations.
The mayor, Sebastián Martín, assures that “it is a victory for Arico, since a potentially harmful waste treatment for the environment is ruled out. The Cabildo must understand that we are committed to recycling, that it must watch over the inhabitants of Arico and that they deserve consensus and agreements, not impositions.”
The Arico government will remain vigilant “In case they finally back down and opt for thermal treatments, contrary to what is defended in the municipality, since the installation must obtain municipal licenses and have an environmental impact study.”
