The president of People’s Party (PP) of Tenerife, Emilio Navarro, and the counselor of this same political party in the Cabildo, Manuel Fernández, held yesterday working meetings with representatives of the Tenerife Network collective and the Círculo de Empresarios del Sur de Tenerife with the aim of disseminating among the social and economic agents of the Island the motion that the popular will defend this Friday in the plenary session of the Cabildo, in relation to the iInclusion of the Tren del Sur in the Railway Network of General Interest.
The PP continues, in this way, with its round of contacts with different social and business groups on the Island, to seek support for this proposal “of vital importance for Tenerifebecause it is the only way to be able to access European funds for the financing of this railway infrastructure project».
Emilio Navarro described as “very satisfactory” the meetings held with businessmen from the South, during which “we have been able to exchange opinions on the needs we have in terms of mobility, and they have shown us support for the initiative that we are going to defend this Friday at the Cabildo».
On this issue, Navarro claimed the need for “the consensus that we find in Tenerife society to be transferred to the political groups that make up the entire island, in the idea that the South train is a fundamental project for the development of the Island, since it is an infrastructure that would contribute significantly to solving the problems of collapse that we Tenerife people suffer daily”, and appealed to the case of “Gran Canaria, where all the political forces supported this initiative, which will be a reality on our Island neighbor”.
Manuel Fernandez pointed out that the Cabildo «has spent 36 million euros on projects related to the train in recent years, and it makes no sense for the institution to abandon the initiative now». In this regard, both Navarro and Fernández agreed to claim that «now that Europe is willing to finance the train, the Administration has to take the necessary step to include it in the General Interest Railway Network, so that, although the project is not execute immediately, we can have financing”.
The popular ones insisted that «we cannot give up this financing. It is an investment opportunity and a tool to be more competitive as a tourist destination, without forgetting that almost 300,000 people live in the South of Tenerife».
