Mercadona incorporates two Red Cross soup kitchens to its daily food distribution network in Tenerife. The company has started collaborating with the regional assemblies of the humanitarian organization in Granadilla and Icod de los Vinos through the daily delivery of products such as fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish, cold cuts, bread or pasta. There are already 17 dining rooms and distribution entities to which the company delivers food every day from the closest supermarkets.
Mercadona, an entity with physical supermarkets and online sales, has already started this collaboration with the regional assemblies of Abona and Noroeste. Donations are made first thing in the morning, Monday through Friday. The products, suitable for consumption but not for sale, are delivered in the best quality and food safety conditions so that they reach the more than 3,000 people it serves. Red Cross in the two municipalities for one year.
David González, director of External Relations for Mercadona in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, declares: “We feel very satisfied to contribute a grain of sand to the great work that the Red Cross does; we see it daily, since there are already nine centers of the entity with which we collaborate». González adds: “We greatly appreciate their work and altruistic dedication because they are key to Canarian society.”
For her part, the provincial president of the Red Cross, Mayte Pociello, highlighted “the Mercadona’s commitment to solidarity, which has been revealed when society has needed us most, as in during the confinement due to the pandemic or in the emergency due to the eruption of the volcano in La Palma ». Pociello values: “The incorporation of two centers to its network will allow many vulnerable families to receive fresh and non-perishable food.”
Mercadona donated more than 600 tons of food to soup kitchens and charities in the province during 2021, 45% more than in 2020.
