SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 22 (EUROPE PRESS) –
Mercadona has begun a collaboration with the regional assemblies that the Red Cross has in Granadilla de Abona and Icod de los Vinos (Abona Regional Assembly and Northwest Regional Assembly) through the daily delivery of essential products such as fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish, sausage, bread or pasta.
Donations are made first thing in the morning, Monday through Friday. The products, which are suitable for consumption but not for sale, are delivered in the best conditions of quality and food safety so that they reach the more than 3,000 people served by the Red Cross in the two municipalities for a year. With this incorporation, there are now 17 soup kitchens and distribution entities with which the company collaborates in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
According to David González, director of External Relations in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, “we feel very satisfied to be able to contribute a small grain of sand to the great work that the Red Cross does in the province and that we see daily, since there are already nine centers of the entity with which we collaborate. We greatly appreciate their work and altruistic dedication, key to Canarian society”.
For her part, the provincial president of the Red Cross in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Mayte Pociello, highlighted “Mercadona’s commitment to solidarity, which has been revealed when society has needed us most, as was the case during the months of confinement due to the pandemic or in the emergency due to the eruption of the volcano in La Palma”.
“The addition of two more Red Cross centers to its distribution network will allow many vulnerable families to receive daily fresh and non-perishable food, essential to achieve a better quality of life for the most disadvantaged people,” he added.
Mercadona maintains a social commitment to the residents of the areas in which it has a presence and activity. In the case of the Canary Islands, the supermarket company donated more than 600 tons of food to soup kitchens and charities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during 2021, 45% more than in 2020.
