The cold drop or DANA (isolated high-level depression) said goodbye yesterday to the Archipelago with strong waves and gusts of wind that reached 95 kilometers per hour at some points. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) maintained active yellow notices in La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and the south of Tenerife due to the expected intense gusts. Both in Izaña and in the Gomeran municipality of Vallehermoso, the force of the wind exceeded 90 kilometers per hour, although there were no notable incidents.
The bad state of the sea also marked yesterday’s day, especially on the north coast of Tenerife where the waves could reach four meters in height. A strong wave that could cause a person to fall into the sea in Puerto de la Cruz, in the Laja de Sal natural pool area, so a search device had to be activated. A GES helicopter and a Maritime Rescue vessel participated in it. As night fell, the operation had to be suspended and is scheduled to resume first thing in the morning today, according to 112 Canarias.
Rainfall yesterday was not as heavy as last Saturday when in some points of the Archipelago, such as La Laguna, in Tenerife, or La Vega de San Mateo, in Gran Canaria, 36 liters per square meter were recorded .
Yesterday the heaviest rains occurred in the central area of Gran Canaria, with 12.6 liters per square meter in San Mateo and 10.6 in Tejeda. In Tenerife, the locality in which the highest level of rainfall was recorded was San Juan de la Rambla with 10 liters per square meter.
But the rain not only watered these three points of the Islands but also fell in a generalized way in the west, center and east of Gran Canaria, in La Palma, La Gomera and Tenerife, especially on the northern slope of the island.
The storm pulled temperatures down. In the Canyons of Teide thermometers dropped to -3.1 degrees yesterday morning and to -2.4 in Izaña. Frigid temperatures that caused Teide to be covered with a light layer of snow. A situation that forced the Cabildo de Tenerife Roads area to close yesterday morning the accesses to the National Park through La Orotava, due to the presence of snow, and through La Esperanza, as there were ice sheets on the surface. However, just six hours later the accesses were reopened.
La Dana gave the last blows yesterday in the Archipelago and in fact today the State Meteorological Agency has deactivated the wind warnings. However, it does forecast that occasional rainfall may occur on all the islands, except Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. It does not rule out that they could be locally strong in La Palma and Tenerife, where they could even be accompanied by an isolated storm.
