The Civil Guard investigates the burning of a centenary dragon tree in the north of Tenerife

The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard has initiated an investigation to clarify the burning of a dragon tree specimen in the Tenerife municipality of Icod de los Vinos, sources from the Benemérita have reported.

The burning occurred this Thursday afternoon and affected the so-called San Antonio dragon tree, located in the Manuel Cabrera square of the aforementioned Tenerife municipality, which was attended by firefighters, Local Police, Civil Protection and 112.

Seprona is now trying to clarify whether the flames that affected the specimen, which is not the ancient emblem of the municipality, were produced by an act of vandalism.

The Telesforo Bravo-Juan Coello Foundation has, for its part, lamented on its social networks the attack on “one of the plant symbols of Tenerife and a monumental tree in the Canary Islands”, and ensures that the Icod Local Police speaks of an intentional act.

The entity, which is dedicated to scientific dissemination and environmental protection, wonders “what has to happen for a vandalism prevention program to be acted upon and launched in the Canary Islands” and questions whether “we are doomed to lose our heritage nature and culture”.

Politicians and users did not hesitate to express their outrage through the networks: “More education and respect and less brainless.”
