SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 9 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The spokesperson for Infrastructure of the Popular Group in the Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda Commission, Andrés Lorite, has visited the recovery works that are being carried out in the La Laguna area, in Los Llanos de Aridane, the most affected municipality by the eruption of the La Palma volcano, and has asked the Government of Spain for a specific fund for the recovery of the Island, which is endowed with 60 million euros.
Andrés Lorite has been accompanied by the national deputy and spokesperson for the PP in the Housing Commission, Ana Zurita; the deputy for Santa Cruz de Tenerife Sebastián Ledesma, and by the president of the PP of La Palma and president of the Island Council, Mariano H. Zapata, and also held a meeting with the Professional Associations of Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Industrial Technical Engineers and Engineers Public Works Technicians.
Lorite pointed out that now more than ever La Palma needs all administrations to work hand in hand and use all the tools at their disposal so that the Island recovers as soon as possible. For this reason, he asked the central Executive to finance 100% of the infrastructure works that the city councils and Cabildos have to carry out, as a result of the volcano, “and not 50% as the Government of Spain intends.” “Right now the island administrations are collapsed and Sánchez must keep the word he gave the palmeros,” he said.
For her part, Ana Zurita explained that the situation experienced by the Island is exceptional, “so the Government of Spain must also take exceptional measures.” For this reason, she asked Sánchez to create a new specific fund for La Palma in which items are included to continue buying homes for the victims, as well as an investment for the affected municipalities, as well as for the Cabildo. “It is precisely these institutions that are closest to citizens, and those that have been working tirelessly for the well-being of their neighbors,” she defended.
In addition, he recalled that it was the Government of Pedro Sánchez itself that stated that the money was not going to be a problem for the reconstruction of the Island, “but the truth is that there was no item nominated for recovery in the 2022 accounts, and the amendments that had been presented for a value of 1,000 million euros were rejected,” he assured.
Finally, Mariano H. Zapata pointed out that the Island “is immersed in its own recovery and, as he said, “we are going to continue working as we have done so far so as not to leave any of our neighbors behind, because as we we mark the first day of government our priority is the well-being of all palmeros”.
