The sale on public roads in Puerto de la Cruz is regulated in an ordinance approved in 2015. Sergio Méndez

The City Council of Puerto de la Cruz, through the Local Police, has issued 14 fines for street vending in the last five months for not having the proper authorizations to carry out this activity on public land.

The last of them was filed on Monday morning as a result of the sale of potatoes on public roads, while the rest have been for clothing and/or accessories.

According to the current ordinance, approved and published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (BOP) in September 2015, the penalties can reach up to 3,000 serious in case of a very serious nature, ranging between 1,500 and 750 euros if they are serious, but those that have been imposed are around 500 as they are considered minor.

“It is a delicate issue that involves people and that unfortunately has been dragging on for several decades, so work continues to be able to balance social intervention with the aim of building a better future for all those people with respect for the legality”, recognizes the mayor, Marco González, who in turn is responsible for the Security area.

In this sense, it informs that the Sectoral Council of Commerce agreed to carry out two informative campaigns, one of them dedicated to raising awareness about street vending, aimed at both the local population and tourists, which is proposed “from respect and non-discrimination against people from specific communities”. For administrative reasons, its development was postponed but in return several meetings have been held with merchant associations, as well as with the local and National Police, says the president.

“The municipal government is trying to deal with this situation, especially the one that has to do with the people who do it positively, to offer them opportunities so that their life project expands and they can manage to develop, with the help of the administrations through courses and workshops as well as different municipal areas, broaden these capacities and be able to have access to other jobs, as well as influence the cultural integration of this group of people”, underlines González.
