Cabildo and Ecoembes distribute 3,000 selective collection containers in 2021

The Sustainable Development area of the Cabildo de Tenerife and Ecoembes invested 280,000 euros in 2021 in 70 actions, which translate into the distribution of almost 3,000 containers of various formats, whose objective has been the improvement of the selective collection and recycling of household waste. plastic containers, cans and briks yellow container and paper and cardboard on the island of Tenerife.

Javier Rodríguez, Minister for Sustainable Development and the Fight against Climate Change, assured that “these actions, included in the so-called Plan Tenerife, are a support to the municipalities of the Island to encourage and facilitate the selective collection of waste, a primary objective of the Cabildo, and on which the corporation works intensely». He added that around 2,600 litter bins and 258 light containers have been distributed among 24 local entities on the island. “Although the collection competence is municipal, the Cabildo collaborates and supports this management to be able to evolve towards a new waste management model », he remarked.

In this line, 52 containers have also been delivered to increase the selective collection of light packaging and paper-cardboard waste in the municipalities of Arafo, Fasnia, Vilaflor de Chasna, Tegueste, La Orotava, San Miguel de Abona and the Commonwealth of San Juan de la Rambla-La Guancha. Another important line of action has been the projects focused on the hospitality sector through Ecohosteleros, which has already reached Granadilla de Abona, San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with which they have provided themselves with different means and incentives to more than 270 hotel and restaurant establishments, to facilitate and promote the selective collection of their packaging waste. Tenerife has also been the first region at a national level to implement the Ecohosteleros online platform.

“A key pillar”

Carlota Cruz, head of Ecoembes in the Canary Islands, pointed out that collaboration is “a key pillar” to be able to develop new lines of work that “contribute to improving the collection and recycling of household packaging”. «With this agreement it has been shown, once again, that the objective of the Cabildo and Ecoembes is the same: caring for the environment and promoting the circularity of waste through recycling. A task that involves us all », she concluded.
