The Government of the Canary Islands includes the ‘monument to Victory’ –located on Anaga Avenue in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and known as the ‘monument to Franco’– in the catalog of illegal symbols for breaching the Historical Memory Law. The list, which includes numerous Francoist symbols, streets, monuments and mentions that still exist in the capital of Tenerife, will be presented tomorrow and from that moment the procedures for its withdrawal or resignification can be started.
The announcement occurs right in the middle of the controversy unleashed as a result of the fact that the Public Services area in the Santa Cruz City Council, which is directed by the mayor Guillermo Díaz Guerra, of the PP, has awarded a company, for a budget of 13,000 euros , the drafting of a project for the repair of the fountain of the aforementioned monument to Franco. The spokesman for the Socialist Party in the chicharrero Consistory, José Ángel Martín, calls it “boldness” that the government group (CC, PP and the mayor of Cs Evelyn Alonso) “spend money on this study when they know perfectly well that it cannot be fixed nothing, because the monument violates the Law of Historical Memory and will have to be withdrawn ».
With regard to the Government’s catalog, the Socialist councilor highlights that this document “will mark what we should do with this monument, which violates two laws, the regional and the national, and with the rest of the Francoist symbols that still exist in this municipality, and there can no longer be excuses on the part of the government group” of the City Council of the capital. In any case, Martín denounces, “the Consistory could have acted for a long time, since a study commissioned by the PP in the previous mandate concluded that the monument to Franco on Anaga Avenue should be removed.”
“However, the only ones who did something were us when we were governing. All the political groups then unanimously agreed that the monument broke the law and that something had to be done. Therefore, he says “we do not understand what is trying to repair it now,” adds the socialist.
Wyat a bullshit. Without Franco Spain could be communist country in thirties with gulags, shortage of food, etc.
