Get to know, one by one, the 78 Francoist vestiges of Santa Cruz de Tenerife cataloged by the Canarian Government

The Canary Islands Governmentthrough its Vice-Ministry of Culture and Cultural Heritage, has identified up to 78 Franco vestiges in Santa Cruz of Tenerifein addition to proposing the withdrawal of 122 decorations.

Said list, which now reveals DIARY OF NOTICES exclusively, they are the result of “a document that over three thousand pages exhaustively and rigorously records these elements in the island’s capital and that must now be approved by the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports, after being informed by the Technical Commission of Historical Memory. The investigation has been led by the professor of History, Maisa Navarro, together with the expert doctors Ricardo A. Guerra Palmero and Yolanda Peralta Sierra”, reports the regional Executive.

In this regard, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Cultural Heritage, Juan Márquez, points out that “all public administrations have the obligation to comply with regional and state law” and underlines that in “the recognition and reparation of the victims of Francoism, all people We Democrats must compromise.”

The goal of this Catalogue of Francoist vestiges is none other than to promote compliance with the provisions of the Law of Historical Memory of the Canary Islands, and its importance is well explained by the statements made by the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, where he assures that, with regard to one of the most striking cases (the monument to Franco located at the intersection of the Ramblas with Francisco La Roche), the City Council will proceed to remove it as soon as the Government formalizes said catalog.

Moreover, in preparing this list, the investigation carried out on behalf of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and delivered to the Government of the Canary Islands on July 2, 2019, has been taken into account, to guide municipal actions due to the case initiated against the corporation in 2017 and ratified in May 2018 for non-compliance with the 2007 Historical Memory Law. Even the Principal Investigator of the City Council report is the same one who has directed the government work to prepare the Catalog, Dr. María Isabel Navarro.
