SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 8 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Sustainable Development and Fight Against Climate Change area and Ecoembes, invested 280,000 euros in 70 actions in 2021, which translates into the distribution of almost 3,000 containers of various formats, whose objective has been the improvement of the selective collection and recycling of waste plastic containers, cans and yellow container briks and paper and cardboard on the island of Tenerife.
“These actions, included in the so-called Plan Tenerife, are a support to the municipalities of the island to encourage and facilitate the selective collection of waste, a primary objective of the Cabildo, and on which the corporation works intensely,” said Javier Rodríguez Medina, who He added that “around 2,600 litter bins and 258 light containers have been distributed among 24 local entities on the island, and although the responsibility for collection is municipal, the Cabildo collaborates and supports this management in order to evolve towards a new model of management of the waste”.
In this line, 52 containers have also been delivered to increase the selective collection of light packaging and paper-cardboard waste in the municipalities of Arafo, Fasnia, Vilaflor de Chasna, Tegueste, La Orotava, San Miguel de Abona and the Commonwealth of San Juan de la Rambla-La Guancha.
Another important line of action has been the projects focused on the hospitality sector through Ecohosteleros, which has already reached Granadilla de Abona, La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with which different means and incentives have been provided to more of 270 hotel and restaurant establishments, to facilitate and promote the selective collection of their packaging waste.
Tenerife has also been the first region at a national level to implement the Ecohosteleros online platform.
“Collaboration is a key pillar to be able to develop new lines of work that contribute to improving the collection and recycling of domestic packaging. With this agreement it has been made clear, once again, that the objective of the Cabildo and Ecoembes is the same : caring for the environment and promoting the circularity of waste through recycling. A task that involves us all,” said Carlota Cruz, head of Ecoembes in the Canary Islands.
