SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 7 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has reported that fourteen possible cases of COVID-19 due to the Omicron subvariant BA.2 are being studied in the health area of Tenerife. The result of the sequencing will be known after the completion of the study, which is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
Of the fourteen cases, three are still complying with the corresponding home isolation and the rest are already discharged, without registering complications from COVID-19. Only one of the cases, a newborn, was hospitalized for a few days under clinical surveillance as a precaution and given his favorable evolution, he was discharged after three days. According to experts, this subvariant appears to be more transmissible than the Omicron BA.1 variant, but not more severe.
The genomic surveillance network for COVID-19 in the Canary Islands includes a protocolized system for the detection, monitoring and control of the presence of the different variants of SARS-Cov2 in the Islands, the results of which are communicated weekly to the Ministry of Health, as It is protocolized for all the autonomous communities.
This network was launched in March of last year, through the Directorate of Public Health, its different controls allow obtaining a real X-ray of the incidence of the different strains of the virus in the Archipelago.
