The same day that the Labor Reform was approved in the Congress of Deputies, with the CC vote, among others, and in which one of its most positive points is the reduction in temporary employment, Santa Cruz released its data of employment corresponding to the month of January, among which the highest rate of indefinite contracts since 2007 stands out. “It is a very positive figure for this first month of the year, in which the number of indefinite contracts grew to 1,369. This represents a significant growth compared to the month of December (an increase of 28.5%), and represents the highest rate on the total number of contracts since 2007, since of every 100 contracts that are signed, 14.6 are indefinite ”, valued yesterday the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez.

And it is that with the figures in hand, the mayor defends that Santa Cruz consolidates itself in January as the engine of contracting in Tenerife. “In absolute numbers, we registered 9,378 contracts, which represents a growth of 76.6% compared to January 2021, that is, 4,067 more contracts.” In this sense, Bermúdez stressed that “in addition, the contracts registered this January in Santa Cruz are higher than those of January 2020, that is, before the pandemic, and it is something that does not happen on an insular or regional scale”, and stressed that “this strong growth in contracting, and which has been maintained over time, has caused the capital to consolidate itself as the engine of the island economy, since this growth of 4,067 contracts represents 38.4% of the increase in the interannual contracting of the Island”.

Regarding unemployment, the mayor pointed out that “unemployment this month stood at 21,386 people, which represents a very slight increase compared to December, as was already planned, as corresponds to the seasonality of the beginning of the year, where it ends the period the sales in the commercial sector. However, what is especially relevant is the decrease of 6,095 people compared to the same period a year ago, which represents a drop in registered unemployment of -22.2%”.

For his part, the CEO of the Development Society, Alfonso Cabello, stressed that the report on the labor situation in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, prepared by the Socioeconomic Observatory of the Development Society, indicates that “compared to the rest of the territories , the evolution of unemployment in the capital is similar to that registered in Tenerife and the Canary Islands”. Likewise, the mayor pointed out that “we face a start to the year with clear signs of recovery, although we must continue to be cautious.”
