The Santa Cruz City Council rules out organizing the Carnival in the Port

Jose Manuel Bermudezmayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has “given order” to the technicians of the Autonomous Organism of Festivities (OAFAR) so that “immediately” a new location is sought for the celebration of the next Carnival.

“The refusal of the Port Authority, expressed even in a press release sent to the media, as well as the counterproposal that they have sent us through third parties, which is still not supported by technical reports (45 days of use of the esplanade, without justifying why they have proposed that period), they make us see that the Port Authority has no interest in redirecting the situation,” said Bermúdez, who points out that he had not received “not even a call” from the president of the Port Authority.

The mayor of the capital indicates that they have “renounced” this place, due to the need to find a location for the competitions as soon as possible: “We renounce carrying out this activity in a space that is public, but whose use seems to be conditioned to the defense of political interests, instead of defending the interests of citizens and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is a festival of international interest”.

After learning about the offer of Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo, to host these events at the Fairgrounds, Bermúdez said that he finds it “strange that the fairgrounds can now be made available to the Carnival when that was the first option that the City Council tried. And the answer was no.
