In the course of last year, the animal welfare centers of the Cabildo registered the adoption of some 300 dogs that were in their facilities. “An important and very high figure,” assured the president of the Island Corporation, Pedro Martín, for whom that fact is not enough. “We have to continue working on this line, because, unfortunately, while some dogs leave to be adopted, others enter when they are abandoned.”

In this line, the Cabildo de Tenerife will use 1,071,197 euros of its budget for the year in actions related to animal welfare. A large part of the budget will go to the Tierra Blanca (Fasnia) and Ravelo (El Sauzal) animal shelters, dependent on the Island Corporation, in which relevant works are currently being carried out for their adaptation and improvement.

The announcement was made yesterday by the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, together with the island councilor responsible for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla. He did it during the visit they made to the facilities of the Tierra Blanca Animal Protection Center, in which the Cabildo has made an investment of close to 450,000 euros, which made it possible to build a new warehouse and several garden areas. .

The fasniera kennel has a new warehouse and this year it will invest in replacing the roof of another dependency and building complementary spaces

Pedro Martín also advanced that throughout this year the Island Corporation will allocate almost 100,000 euros to replace the roof of nave 1 of this fasniero enclosure, when the presence of asbestos is detected, and a total of 55,696 euros to the execution of walking and exercise areas. All this, with the aim of improving the quality of life of animals and promoting their socialization and exercise.

“We were clear that animal care was one of the pending subjects of the Cabildo de Tenerife, that is why we have multiplied investments and given a total turnaround to animal protection and care policies,” said Martín. In this sense, the president stressed that the animals already have “not only completely renovated facilities, but also an operating room and recreation and walking areas.”

Javier Parrilla, for his part, mentioned the amount of 400,000 euros consigned by the Cabildo for the Ravelo hostel (El Sauzal), where he will build a sewage treatment plant and set up a veterinary clinic. Some works that are added to the adaptation work already carried out in the shelter in sanitary, electrical and locksmith matters and that involved an investment of 50,000 euros.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries also influenced the effort that the Corporation has been making during this mandate not only to improve the quality of the infrastructure, but also to adapt the environment. “The animals that arrive at Tierra Blanca and Ravelo deserve pleasant, comfortable facilities in the best conditions, which allow them to exercise and socialize, as well as receive the care and health care they need,” said Parrilla Gómez.

In line with the above, the insular president emphasized the effort and work of the staff of both animal protection centers. «Both here and in Ravelo we have professionals who, together with their training and preparation for the care of these animals, have a great vocation and give their time and dedication to caring for them. And for us, this is also a guarantee and encourages us to continue investing”, he reflected.

The new ship, which has 56 kennels and capacity to house between 56 and 112 animalss, represented an investment of 426,642 euros, while the cost of the landscaped areas, whose works were also completed, amounted to 17,510 euros, detailed Javier Parrilla. To complete the housing space of Tierra Blanca, the Cabildo plans to build three exercise and walk patios, equipped with shade structures so that dogs can use the outside at any time of day, even in summer. The three patios will total 885 square meters and each of them will have a shaded area of 108 square meters. The interior of the ships complies with the specific sectoral regulations “regarding sanitary conditions and handling of animals, indoor air quality, water supply and evacuation of cleaning and waste water, its purification and discharge”.
