The City Council of Santa Cruz, through the area of Community Welfare and Public Services, directed by Guillermo Díaz Guerra, has already started with the night schedule in the selective collection service called Door to door of commercial paper and cardboard.
Since last Wednesday, January 19, businesses in the area between Imeldo Serís, General Gutiérrez, Villalba Hervás, El Pilar and Méndez Núñez streets have begun to leave their paper and cardboard waste during the new hours to facilitate their pickup.
The first deputy mayor and councilor for Public Services, Guillermo Díaz Guerra, explains that this modification is due to the objective of avoiding traffic problems in the area and improving the urban landscape of the municipality, highlighting that “this special service only in 2021 managed to collect 1,017 tons of commercial paper and cardboard in the capital of Tenerife”.
Businesses must leave paper and cardboard folded, ordered and tied, always free of other types of waste, in the nearest container. In the case of El Pilar, Castillo and Imeldo Seris streets (once the road works are finished), merchants will be able to deposit paper and cardboard waste at the door of their business, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The mayor points out that “this new design of the service increases its efficiency, reduces its costs and improves the image of the center and the commercial environment of Santa Cruz”. It adds that it is a collaboration with the commercial area to facilitate the fulfillment of its obligations, improve its fields of activity and optimize its resources as large generators of waste.
“This service combines the criteria of service, efficiency and sustainability”, says Guillermo Díaz Guerra, “since it is a complementary route to the usual paper and cardboard waste collection systems”, he adds.
From the Public Services area of the City Hall, it is recalled that with the implementation of the new night schedule, the afternoon collection that allowed the deposit between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. will be abolished.
Recycling
The City Council of Santa Cruz has recovered a total of 82,711,665 kilos in the outgoing year of 2021 in the transport and separate collection of domestic and commercial waste. The Councilor for Public Services points out that “the waste collection statistics in 2021 confirm a progressive increase in the recovery of recyclable materials”. The collection of residual fraction waste has decreased compared to 2020 by around 5 million kilos, with a volume of 70,431,341 kilos in 2021. This reduction confirms a greater social commitment to recycling and a greater separation of organic matter. The yellow container, for light packaging, has progressively increased its waste throughout 2021, with a total of 2,867,890 kilos recovered, while the collection of paper and cardboard obtains a volume of 4,392,872 kilos.
