The mayor of Los Realejos, in Tenerife, Manuel Domínguez, who will be the new president of the PP of the Canary Islands from Sunday after the celebration of his party’s congress, intends to promote the presence of his political force in the 88 municipalities of the Islands, where they rule at 13.
The president of the PP of Tenerife, the only candidate to preside over the regional organization, assures that he wants the city councils to be the “muscle” of the party, which must build its insular and regional structures starting from the local level. “I am very excited and eager, although my heart is heavy because it will be telematic and I will not be able to count on the support of the affiliates,” he says when asked about the 15th Regional Congress, which is being held tomorrow.
Domínguez, who will be the fifth president of the PP in Canary Islands after José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, José Manuel Soria, Asier Antona and Australia Navarro, admits that it is “a double responsibility” to be the only candidate because the fact that “everyone” has made a bet “on one color” means that they expect a lot from him.
Likewise, he comments that his candidacy wants to unite everyone, those who are, those who want to be and those who have left the PP, a party that in the Canary Islands has a total of 39,655 members.
Domínguez, who will be the first president of the PP from Tenerife, admits that his party has had important roots in the administrations of Gran Canaria, although, he maintains, to lead a party it does not matter where it comes from.
Of the thirteen mayors that the PP has in the Canary Islands, six are in Gran Canaria –Moya, Valleseco, Artenara, Santa Brígida, Agaete and Teror–; four in La Palma – Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane, Breña Baja and Barlovento–; three in Tenerife –Los Realejos, La Guancha and Santiago del Teide–; one in Lanzarote, in Arrecife; and one in Fuerteventura, in Tuineje.
“People are capable regardless of where we come from,” he remarks, while recalling that he has been the first president of the PP in Tenerife in the north of the island, the first mayor of the PP in Los Realejos and the first national deputy in the north of Tenerife. .
The 15th Regional Congress of the Popular Party which will be held electronically, taking into account the current health restrictions, will have the participation of 590 delegates, of which 472 are elected and 118 born, specifies the president of the organizing committee of the congress, Auxiliadora Pérez.
During this congressional appointment, the President of the Popular Party, Pablo Casado, who will close the event; and the general secretary, Teodoro García Egea.
Australia Navarro will also do so, among others, in what will be her last speech as president, after last November she announced her decision not to run for a new term after having thought about it for months and understanding that it is the “right time to take the step.”
After the election of the new president by the 472 elected delegates, the members of the new leadership will be elected on Monday in the regional executive committee. For the moment, just It has transpired that Poli Suárez, the head of the organization in Gran Canaria and regional deputy, will be the general secretary of the party, that is, the number two of Domínguez.
However, Domínguez has announced that, as a novelty, it will include a spokesperson, who would be number three, “a person from the party who is neither from Tenerife nor Gran Canaria.”
