More than 4,000 people signed up on the change.org platform to demand the dismissal of the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, after saying in an interview with ‘Televisión Canaria’ that homosexuality is a mortal sin if the person is aware of their actions and It does so freely and without being conditioned.
The initiative has been launched by the LGTBI Diversas association for up to 24 hours and the rejection shown by all the political forces with parliamentary representation in the Canary Islands and by the regional president himself, Ángel Víctor Torres, is added.
The president of Diversas, Sergio Siverio, highlights that a note that the signatures will be transferred to the Vatican in a communication addressed to the Pope and will also be sent to the Episcopal Conference, “so that they take action on the matter once and for all and prevent An ultra and homophobic recidivist bishop like Bernardo Álvarez continues to be a representative of the church.
Siverio has indicated that they will not allow these statements “to end up being a mere punctual controversy”, as happened in 2007 with his statements “justifying pederasty”.
“We are going to mobilize until we get strong measures taken against this bishop and that his displays of hatred against the LGBTI community do not go unpunished,” he insists.
In addition, from Diversas they have taken the opportunity to thank the enormous support of citizens for the initiative launched this Thursday, especially by LGBTI believers linked to the Catholic Church and outraged by these statements.
“No bishop has the power to qualify our rights as mortal sin, we are free to be who we are and we should not be ashamed of it,” they point out.
