The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, clarified yesterday that, although the Carnival is going to be held in June, what is going to be on the street will be the contests and galas, since the space of the Fairgrounds is abandoned , but they do not work in any case for the celebration of the party with massive dances as before the pandemic.
And it is that the announcement generated some expectations among the most carnival-goers that the usual Carnival could be celebrated. The mayor was clear. “We are not working on a carnival in the street. That would only be possible unless the sanitary conditions were adequate for it to happen, and we will not know that until after Easter, “said the councilor in statements to Cope Tenerife.
Bermúdez had already pointed it out at the meeting held with the groups on Monday afternoon. Then he admitted that “if sanitary conditions allowed it, there would be nothing that would excite me more than celebrating Carnival in the street, although I don’t think that’s possible.”
What will be on the street, specifically, on the land of the Port Authority, will be the competitions and the Carnival galas, where the stage will be built, which was scheduled to begin to be erected this week at the Fairgrounds. The dates that are considered are from June 4 to 26, and the order of the competitions and galas should not be the usual one, since, for example, it is being studied that the children’s competitions be moved to the end of the month so that they do not coincide with school exams.
In any case, the details of the dates will be addressed in the meetings that Fiestas will hold, tomorrow and on Friday, with the Carnival groups. As the Santa Cruz City Council announced yesterday, the meetings, which will be face-to-face, will take place tomorrow and Friday. In this series of meetings, which emanate from the agreement reached in the telematic meeting held last Monday, the details of the formats of the galas and contests will be agreed upon, in addition to the development of the carnival programming for next June. For the Councilor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, “despite the uncertainty, the willingness of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council to work in a consensual manner with the different groups in the search for solutions and alternatives is absolute and permanent”, recalling that ” These meetings will lead to agreements that will allow us to respond to the preparations for the Carnival”. For the mayor, “this change of dates, unprecedented in the history of our Carnival, will try to provide certainty, provide protection and give the highest level of splendor possible to our most international festival.”
The different groups of the Carnival will be cited in a staggered manner to comply with the capacity allowed in level 4 of the health alert. On Thursday the meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. with the Song of Laughter, and will continue with rondallas, musical groups, troupes and designers. On Friday it will be the turn for groups for the elderly (4:30 p.m.), choreographic groups, children’s and adult murgas.
