The Popular Party asks the Cabildo to express its “unwavering support” for the Tenerife meat sector. Councilor Valentín González Évora will defend a motion in the Plenary Commission for the Natural Environment to “recognize the work of the thousands of Spanish farmers.” The initiative includes the proposal that the Cabildo demand “the rectification of the state president and the dismissal of the Minister of Consumption for his attacks on one of the most thriving economic sectors in the country.”
González recalls that on March 6, 2020, just before the start of the pandemic, “the Cabildo unanimously approved a motion to promote a Strategic Plan for the livestock sector, which the island government has never developed.”
The counselor highlights that “the meat sector has been improving its processes for years to guarantee the highest food quality and animal welfare.” For this reason, the Popular Party will request that the Cabildo “express its support and, specifically, that of the Island of Tenerife.”
González Évora insists that “cattle ranchers need more support from the Cabildo to develop policies that give stability to their activity and that provide solutions to their specific problems.” He adds that “without greater involvement and coordination on the part of the competent administrations, livestock farming in Tenerife is doomed to disappear.”
He argues that “in recent years the number of heads and farms on the Island have been significantly reduced”, mainly due to “the lack of profitability caused by the increase in the cost of animal feed and supplies, which puts at risk the generational change and the survival of the activity».
The counselor sees “necessary” for the Cabildo to have “a clear position because what our farmers need”, as well as the associated industries, “are policies that favor the sector to make it innovative and dynamic, capable of generating more added value and employment ».
