The annual meeting with the tourism sector should also serve the Island to maintain the idea of adapting the offer of nature, culture or gastronomy, centralized in the axis of new technologies, to the profile of the visitor. The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, highlights “the 7.5 million air seats available for this year, an increase of 53.2% over 2021, and practically comparable to those of 2019, a record in tourist arrivals.”
Tenerife participates from tomorrow until Sunday 23 in a new edition of the International Tourism Fair, which is held in Madrid. The appointment returns to January after last year it was held in May as a result of the pandemic. In 2021, the national market became the first source of tourists for Tenerife, ahead of the British and Germans. Until last November, the segment of national visitors registered an increase of 53.3% compared to the same period of 2020. The number of Spaniards staying in those eleven months rose to 869,633, compared to 567,208 the previous year (302,425 more travelers ).
Pedro Martín highlights: “This improvement in the Spanish market in such a complicated and uncertain context is the result of intense work carried out to increase air connectivity with the main source markets.” It details that in 2021 the air capacity with the Peninsula had already increased by 48% compared to the previous year. The president indicates that this positive evolution is expected to continue this year, since “to date we have confirmed a regular capacity of around 7.5 million air seats, both national and international, which represents 53.2% more than in 2021 ». The first data for January confirm a growing interest from national travellers, as reservations have multiplied by five compared to the same week last year.
The island’s director of Tourism, Laura Castro, focuses “on the reinforcement for this year, with a budget increase of 4.5%, up to 27 million euros.” It points to the objective of “supporting the work to recover visitors, which allows us to return to the top of the favorite destinations for national and international tourists.” Castro values: «One of the main strategic lines in 2022 focuses on improving promotion and connectivity, for which we have planned 16 million, to which we must add the items for the improvement of the destination with actions on the coast, the new offices tourist information or smart signage.
For his part, David Pérez highlights that “one of the main objectives at Fitur 2022 is to facilitate direct dialogue with the main operators in the sector to reach agreements and alliances for the high summer season of 2022.” Also, he adds, “we seek to continue advancing in the objectives of sustainable tourism development after the certification of Tenerife as a Biosphere destination.” Pérez explains that “another great element of strength is digitization with recognition as the first Spanish island as a Smart Tourist Destination and for the Artificial Intelligence Tourism Master Plan, a pioneer in the country.”
During the fair, the delegation from Tenerife will hold meetings with traditional travel operators, OTAs (online travel agencies), airlines, the media and Spanish tourist offices. Today, one day before the official opening, the delegation holds a meeting with the main directors of the Spanish tourism industry to inform them of the news of the destination.
