Reinforce the expectations of tourist recovery of Arona, positioning the municipality as a safe destination from the health point of view, which is committed to health tourism -which is in its origins-, in addition to reinforcing its commitments with accessibility and with the sustainability, as well as major sporting events such as a major outdoor training facility.

These are the objectives that the municipality has set this year for a new edition of the most notable tourism fair held in Spain, Fitur 2022, which the sector seeks to turn into the starting engine of the

recovery of the main industry for the Canary Islands and for Arona itself, a destination that in 2019, the year before the pandemic, received more than 173,800 national visitors, 11% of the total with a growth of 9.1% with respect to 2018, a remarkable growth.

Official presentation of Arona: Thursday, January 20

The official presentation of Arona will take place at the stand of the Association of Tourist Municipalities next Thursday, January 20, at 2:00 p.m., which will include, in addition to the mayor, José Julián Mena, the councilors of the Tourism areas, José Alberto Delgado, and Sports, Francisco Marichal. In this meeting with the media, the destination will strengthen and acquire new commitments in the field of health, becoming, once, a national and international benchmark.

The presentation will also address the announced Spanish Athletics Master’s Championship, in which athletes will compete, both in male and female categories, hosting speed, long-distance and contest tests. The participants will range from 35 to 80 years old and it is expected to bring together around 1,500 athletes from all over Spain. This event will be held between June 17 and 19 of this year and has, among other objectives, to reinforce one of the periods of lower tourist demand.

XI Exceltur Forum

Shortly before this event, on Tuesday, January 18, the municipality will be part of the XI Exceltur Forum, in which the main public and private actors of the sector participate, with the forecast of the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto , as well as other officials from the Governments of Spain and the Canary Islands, leading organizations and companies.

The evolution of the tourism model, as well as the commitment to sustainability and digitization will be some of the keys to this meeting prior to the opening of Fitur and in which they will analyze the new uncertainties that have arisen in the tourism sector.

Meeting of the main national sun and beach destinations

Fitur will also serve as a framework for a meeting of the Alliance of Sun and Beach Tourist Municipalities, which brings together the main destinations of these characteristics throughout Spain and of which Arona is one of the founding members.

Those responsible for all of them will hold a round table that will take place on Thursday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. that will precede the delivery of the AMT Smart Destinations Awards 2022, which will recognize the best technological solutions and tools that help to face the challenges of the implementation of a smart tourist destination (DTI).

José Julián Mena: “Unity to ensure recovery”

The mayor of Arona explained that this edition of Fitur takes place in a framework of “significant uncertainties, with new obstacles in the fight against the pandemic, uncertainties that directly affect our destinations, for which health security and a safe mobility, factors that are facing challenges that have arisen in recent months. Hence -he added- that Arona goes to Fitur to deepen its character as a health destination and as a space that offers health security conditions”.

José Alberto Delgado: “Continue to be pioneers at an international level”

The councilor for the Tourism area has emphasized the importance of “Arona going to Fitur assuming new commitments and giving good news as a destination.
