In 2021, the Cabildo has improved the professional training of almost 4,000 people through different courses and actions. The island councilor for Employment, Socioeconomic Development and Foreign Action, Carmen Luz Baso, highlights a free training that is adapted to the most demanded profiles in the labor market.
Baso explains that these training courses are aimed mainly at unemployed people, but also at entrepreneurs, and were managed by the Insular Foundation for Training, Employment and Business Development (Fifede). It adds that the design of the contents was carried out in accordance with the options to increase the options of the students to access a job.
The project with which the most people were trained in 2021 was Barrios por el Empleo, which has the participation of Cáritas, Red Cross, Don Bosco, the General Foundation of the ULL and Sinpromi. In total, 2,500 program participants received training related mainly to hospitality, customer service, computers, cooking and gardening. Almost 900 people took one of the online courses made available to the island’s residents through the training platform launched during the pandemic.
In this tool, aimed at both the unemployed and other workers, the list of most requested courses is made up of basic and advanced English; management of computer programs (word, Excel…); accounting analysis; human Resources; fiscal and labor management for small businesses or micro-enterprises; recruitment and staff selection; evacuation and emergency plans, as well as customer care and loyalty and protocol.
For the first time, intensive programming training was launched in 2021, which allowed 20 unemployed people with no prior computer knowledge to be able to make mobile applications or video games in a few months. Carmen Luz Baso highlights the success of this training with more than 60% job placement and anticipates that this year there will be a new course.
Other training actions given to the unemployed focused on environmental management, personal skills for employment, job orientation, digital marketing or professional transition towards digitalisation, while 69 participants took part in the Employment Launches in Garachico, Adeje and La Victoria.
As for entrepreneurs, one of the most popular courses was the online Business Creation course. Other actions linked to entrepreneurial resilience for times of change or cybersecurity in small businesses stand out.
