The Canarian public health system would reduce costs if it opted for the repair and sharpening of its instruments instead of just replacement
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 15 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The largest civil hospital ship in the world has repaired its surgical equipment on the island of Tenerife and is making final preparations to head to Senegal at the end of this month of January, where it will once again provide its solidarity work, which had to stop due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19.
The ‘Africa Mercy’ reached the port of Granadilla on January 2 after spending more than 3 months in dry dock and carrying out repair work. There, all the maintenance and repair of the surgical instruments of the floating hospital has been carried out by the company Atenor, specialized in professional surgical and industrial sharpening but also for the hotel or domestic industry.
The hospital ship belongs to the NGO ‘Naves de Esperanza’ (www.mercyships.org), is more than 152 meters long, weighs more than 16,000 tons and equips five operating theaters and a hospitalization floor with 82 beds.
Its objective is to transport first-class medical facilities to developing countries where it is usually docked for 10 months to provide urgent medical and surgical care, but also to do what it can to improve the quality of public health in these countries and promote lasting changes. in the quality and availability of your health care.
Atenor has been involved with the NGO since 2015 in sharpening the surgical material of the ‘Africa Mercy’, as explained by the company through a press release, in which it details that already in 2018 it carried out “the set-up of over 5,000 pieces” of this same ship.
With more than 20 years of experience in the hospital sector, Atenor -of Asturian origin- carries out maintenance or repair of cutting tools on the island of Tenerife for food companies, for the industrial sector, for veterinary clinics or for private healthcare through a professional team in which people with functional diversity also work.
SHARPENING OF SANITARY INSTRUMENTALS IN OTHER AREAS BUT NOT IN THE CANARY ISLANDS
Atenor, present in up to 18 Spanish provinces, carries out periodic maintenance of the sanitary instruments of public centers in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha or Asturias, but not in the Canary Islands, where until now it is only required by private centers.
The company explains that “the frequency of use can shorten the life of the material.” Thus, when the instruments suffer wear or breakage, the public health of the Canary Islands is committed to replacing them with new material. The repair and sharpening of instruments, on the other hand, represents a “cost reduction” for the taxpayer and increases “sustainability”.
