A Carnival in June? That is the question that many carnival goers are asking themselves right now. In cities like Cádiz, that is a decision that has already been made. In Santa Cruz, this Monday, at the meeting that the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, will hold with the Carnival groups, it is very likely that it will be one of the options that will be considered. And it is that the delay of the dates of the chicharrera party par excellence is a reality, so that what remains to be decided is how long that delay will be.

From what DIARIO DE AVISOS has been able to learn, the options that the City Council could propose to the groups are to delay the organization of galas and competitions until the end of March, so that the Carnival takes place until mid-April, avoiding coinciding with the Fiestas of May. The other option would be to move the entire calendar to the end of June.

From the Chicharrero Consistory, despite the fact that these options are already openly discussed within the carnival world, they have not wanted to advance any of the proposals that will be transferred to the groups this Monday.

The only thing that has transpired is that a “reordering” of the calendar will be proposed that will be “new”, but without giving more details, and that whatever is decided, it will be in consensus with the groups. What does seem certain is that what has been announced for months will be communicated and that is that there will be no Carnival in the street this year, whatever the date on which it is decided to celebrate the Chicharrero Carnival.

The current level of infections that the sixth COVID wave is causing does not allow the City Council, or other institutions, to consider holding massive parties such as Carnival on the dates initially planned. Nor have the groups been able to prepare their contests, as their rehearsals were canceled for weeks. That is another of the things that will have to be decided, if the contests are maintained or an exhibition model is opted for as happened in the 2021 Carnival. Just yesterday it was known that the Murgas del Norte Contest was definitively postponed, so which will be already in 2023 when its celebration is resumed.
