The Puerto de la Cruz City Council signed an agreement last week with the veterinary college to improve the care of animals in the northern city of Tenerife, as reported by the council itself in its social media accounts.
The Animal Welfare area, directed by Alberto Castilla, states that this agreement demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
At the signing of the document that commits both parties, the Mayor Marco González and the Councilor for Community Well-being Flora Perera were also present, along with the President of the Canary Islands Veterinary Council and President of the Tenerife Veterinary College, María Luisa Fernández. The first mayor wanted to value the effort of the area to continue taking essential steps to update the assistance of animals in the municipality.
For her part, the president of the school pointed out the importance of the step taken by Puerto de la Cruz and the immediate future of everything related to animals that “without a doubt goes through the professionalization of all the parties involved and making a necessary effort that adapt the sector to the times in which we live and more in a crucial moment like this, in which the new state policies for the protection of animals are beginning to see the light, which pose a horizon quite different from the one we have seen so far ” , he stressed.
In this regard, Sara Capelli, who is also present as manager of the College of Veterinarians of Tenerife, considers “essential the involvement and encouragement on the part of the municipalities for this matter. The vulnerability of animals and their collection by law changes the way in which everything related to pets is treated. That they are from now on one more part of the family, with their rights, indicates that we must prepare the staff of the town halls, the police, the municipal technicians and instill in them that sensitivity that is no longer a choice, but is covered by the law . That changes everything ”, he valued. And in this fact, this signed agreement will play an important role, which gives access to the use of the Canarian pet census ZOOCAN and which will be a tool that the School itself will teach those who correspond to use.
Therefore, this agreement mainly provides the municipality with a real census of pets. A very important step, especially when there is currently no general pet registry, as the laws themselves indicate that it must exist in each of the municipalities. “Some data that will serve to land the reality of the municipality on this issue and that suddenly leaves a first conclusion: there are three times as many dogs registered in the municipality than there are boys and girls, and that gives us reason to think about many aspects and gives clues to the needs that may exist around these figures within our society, limited in space, but very active at the population level ”, underlined Councilor Alberto Castilla.
“This agreement will also help this, which will serve not only as a reference at a consultative level, but as an advisor to the campaigns that will be undertaken, some jointly for the general public, but also others aimed at schoolchildren and also professionals. of the different sectors involved ”, added Castilla.
Likewise, the mayor wanted to underline that it is a great step on this path that remains to be traveled, “a path that is not without difficulties but that we all hope that with the new law that came into force last week, a new impulse with the collaboration of all the administrations to continue fulfilling the commitments that the animals of our city deserve ”.
