SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Canarian Institute of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy (ICHH), dependent on the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, added a total of 66,560 donations in 2021, 5.64 percent more than in 2020, a period in which 63,007 donations were counted .
In this way, during the past year the ICHH recovered the level of donations of 2018, the year prior to the current health pandemic.
Regarding apheresis donations, these also increased, from 3,444 in 2020 to 3,698 in 2021.
The president of the ICHH, Teresa Gutiérrez, was very satisfied with the data obtained: “In 2021 we have managed to continue to be self-sufficient in donating blood and blood products, and we have been able to meet hospital demands, despite the difficulties presented.”
Gutiérrez also thanked the donors for their solidarity, as well as the work of the ICHH staff and collaborating entities.
“These figures are possible thanks to donors, who have continued to come to our centers responding to our appeals, but also to the enormous effort of ICHH staff and hospital centers, who have adapted to the circumstances with responsibility and professionalism”, stressed.
Regarding the distribution by islands, 89.62 percent of the donations came from the capital islands, highlighting the contribution of Gran Canaria with a total, in absolute terms, of 30,791 donations.
Tenerife follows with 28,858 donations, Fuerteventura with 2,692 and Lanzarote with 2,532. In La Palma, 1,293 donations were recorded, in La Gomera 261 and, in El Hierro, 133 donations.
