The derby has yellow blood. The victory of the UD of José Mel Pérez in the Heliodorus (0-1) initiates a brilliant dynamic of results of the Gran Canaria against the eternal rival. It should be noted that in the first round, Las Palmas already beat (2-1) to the ogre of Teide by Luis Miguel Ramis. In this 2021-22 campaign, the balance of two victories in the two bouts is overwhelming – six out of six. The last precedent of a double success in the same campaign flies to the 1999-00 season with Sergio Kresic on the ‘pío pío’ bench.
On the first day of the aforementioned campaign in the silver category, UD beat Tenerife (2-0) thanks to many Tevenet (23 ‘) and David Pirri (54’). In the Insular Stadium, in the league edition of the promotion as Second Division champion, Kresic’s men started in the Ciudad Jardín area in the best possible way.
Already on the 22nd league date, the pupils of the Spanish-Croatian coach Kresic visited the Heliodoro and prevailed (1-2) with the targets of Tevenet – a penalty in 80 ‘- and Marcos Sequeiros (85’). Pablo Paz had overtaken the Blue and Whites, led by the Galician Fernando Castro Santos.
In 1999-00, the UD was crowned with 72 points and the six that it conquered against ‘Tete’. The Tenerife, with four coaches -Mauro Sandreani, Felipe, Castro Santos and Ángel Cappa-, reached 55 units (17 away in relation to the yellows).
To the two victories in Gran Canaria this season, we should add the one achieved last 20-21 in Gran Canaria in the ‘Ortolazo’ derby. Complete the sequence of the last four Canarian classics, the matched one (1-1) last March behind closed doors at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López. Vada put Ramis’ men in franchise and Sergio Ruiz sealed the tie, solving a great individual action. In addition, it should be noted that the yellows chain three visits to Heliodoro without being beaten (2022, 2021 and 2019). The last defeat occurred on May 4, 2019 with José Mel Pérez on the Gran Canaria bench. Cristian Cedrés put the yellows ahead in the 67th minute and then goals from Carlos Ruiz (77 ‘) and Naranjo (87’) turned the score around.
King of Kings
The novelist Mel already accumulates eight Canarian classics with a balance of three victories, three draws and two defeats – one slip was as coach of ‘Tete’. He is the coach with the most passion fights on his record. The first, curiously, happened at the Heliodoro (1-3) when the UD was led by Fernando Vázquez in the blackout derby.
In yellow, Mel’s accounts are three victories, three draws and one defeat, that of the second round in 2019 with Cristian Cedrés’s goal for UD (2-1). The last time that the Gran Canaria team had two victories at the Heliodoro dates back to December 2001.
To the only classic in Primera in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (1-3), it is worth adding the (1-2) of January 2000 in Segunda. Between the two duels, there is a blank season and without contests between the two top representatives, since the UD beat in the highest category and the chicharreros in the silver one.
With the score last Sunday, UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife have met on 65 occasions -in all competitions such as First, Second, Cup and League Cup- with a balance of 25 yellow victories, 25 draws and fifteen Tenerife joys . It should be noted that forty of the 65 pulses have been in the Second Division with eleven yellow victories, 18 draws and eleven successes for the chicharrero team.
In the last ten derbies -see bottom margin table from 14-15-, they are divided in this way: three yellow wins, four draws and two losses. Founded on August 8, 1922, the ‘Tete’, thirteen campaigns in Primera, is celebrating its centenary. For its part, UD figured 34 times in the top category.
