The former mayor of Icod de los Vinos and spokesperson for Somos Icodenses (SI), Jose Ramon Leon, requires that natural sand extracted from the seabed be provided “as soon as possible” to regenerate San Marcos beach, but he clarifies that “if this solution is delayed excessively, an alternative solution could be temporarily sought, which is approved by the population of Icod, without renouncing a subsequent contribution from natural sand, just as is desirable.

León calls on the government group (CC-Cs) to provide the opposition with “all the information available on the project that the mayor says, Francis Gonzalez, who has accepted the General Directorate of State Coasts». And that «whatever it may be, it is subjected to tests with a physical model, and a project based only on mathematical models, which have had known and disastrous results in recent years, is not accepted. San Marcos beach. It is about avoiding damage that would probably be irreparable and definitive.

We are Icodenses states that «these trials should study the alternatives of removing or setting back the additions that, over time, have been added to the bay, such as the beaching esplanade, and recovering the primitive small dock, to restore San Marcos cove to its late 19th century state, which was what led to the creation and growth of the beach. In addition, he asks that “the possibility of adding new strange elements to the bay be discarded. And in no case breakwaters on the surface, to meet the proposal to remove and not add, defended mainly by the neighbors.

León also claims that “it be emphatically discarded the proposed destruction of the historic wall and the undermining of the section that goes between the access stairway to the beach and the start of the pier, due to the effects that this could have on the safety of the neighboring tall buildings, and the great cost of the works. Some resources that could be used in the construction of the desired tunnel under the Nautical Club, which would be a solution with very positive consequences for the development of our beach and the rest of our coastline ».

According to León, the priority would be the contribution of sand to the beach and the completion of the works on the land part, “while the physical studies are completed to obtain the most suitable solution for the bay.” In order of priority, from SI, they request that you start with «rcarry out the conditioning works of the land area; the contribution in the shortest possible time natural and good quality underwater sand, and that physical model tests be commissioned immediately to determine the best possible solution for the final works, which may be carried out later “.

“These proposals are what we have been defending in the beach council for a long time, not only by political groups, but by the citizen organizations that made it up, and they respond to the wishes of the Icod municipality.” According to León, «if the current mayor had been minimally flexible, We would already have sand on the beach, for two summers ».

The spokesperson for Somos Icodenses calls for studies to avoid erroneous measures that may lead to “the definitive destruction of the beach.”

For León, «the town of Icod cannot take a new risk, which can be definitive, with its beach and cannot allow the same design systems, mathematical models, to be used that have been used in the past. This time to fill the bay with breakwaters. It is inadmissible that the most valid and reliable instrument existing today is not used, which are physical tests, whose cost in any case is negligible compared to the overall cost of the work, and especially compared to the risk of final destruction of the beach».

Jose Ramon Leon sees “inadmissible” that the mayor, Francis González (CC), «Use the content of a private conversation, of the many that have been heard in the telematic plenary sessions of the Covid-19 when the microphones were open, to attack a political opponent in the press, for the possible use of a colloquial outburst, very justified in any case, given the lack of modesty, with which the nationalist mayor has deceived those responsible for the administrations responsible for the approval of his breakwater project. In his opinion, by publicly criticizing him for a private conversation accidentally overheard “A red line has been crossed”.
