
The Santa Cruz City Council has rehabilitated more than 2,161 homes throughout the municipality thanks to urban area regeneration plans (ARRU) financed by the State, the Canary Islands Government, the Cabildo and the City Council itself since 2013. This has meant that Hundreds of neighborhood communities have been able to meet the expenses derived from the reform of their buildings, most of them very old, in which the roofs, pipes, waterproofing and telecommunications have been changed.
Last week, the Capital City Council joined the extension of the last ARRU plan in force, which ended on December 31, so that, after signing with the Minister of Housing, Raquel Sánchez, it will allow adding seven million more that will allow to fix another 369 homes in different parts of the capital.
After the signing, the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez pointed out that “it is an ambitious plan of ARRU that will extend its actions in different neighborhoods of the capital” and added that “these works of reform and rehabilitation of houses of very old and deteriorated buildings they will allow, in addition to intervening in the structures of the buildings, such as roofs, pipes, waterproofing and telecommunications, among others, to improve the lives of families, who will have completely renovated buildings with a minimum contribution ”.
Among the improvements brought about by the ARRU Plan, to date, the replacement of the 115 homes in the La Candelaria neighborhood and the comprehensive regeneration in blocks of eight other neighborhoods of the capital -Santa María del Mar, Miramar, Ofra, La Salud, La Victoria, García Escámez, La Cepsa and Los Gladiolos-, corresponding to the Southwest, Ofra-Costa Sur and Salud-La Salle districts, respectively.
In Santa María del Mar, since 2013, the City Council has improved a total of 216 houses through this program, while Miramar has been one of the neighborhoods that has benefited the most from the ARRU Plan with a total of 464 houses that have been adapted to the new regulations. In the popular neighborhood of La Salud, this Plan has benefited 556 families, while in La Victoria 154 homes were regenerated. Works were also carried out in García Escámez in 159 homes.
Cepsa also benefited from the ARRU Plan with actions in 106 houses, while in Ofra the families benefited reached a total of 155. Lastly, the steps taken in the Los Gladiolos neighborhood represent the execution of 236 homes.
As stated in the Municipality’s Budgets for 2022 and in the document signed by Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, this successful program will continue, at least in the next year, with the hope that these actions will be maintained in the plans. of Housing to improve each neighborhood of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Altogether, the Housing area will manage a total of 82 million euros, money from both the City Council and the rest of the public administrations.
