The strong waves surprised the population of Garachico during the early hours of today. The sea broke with force in the Maritime Avenue of the town last night and has been beating strongly since then.
According to the mayor of the municipality of Norte de Tenerife, José Heriberto González, flood warning system failed and he did not realize the possibility of the sea entering ashore. The fact that the water is entering the main road in the Garachique case has forced the closure of Avenida Martítima.
Neither does the Meteorology Statal Agency (Aemet) had decreed a warning of risk due to coastal phenomena, although today it has been fixed. At the yellow level and for the entire coast of La Palma and the northwest of Tenerife, Meteorology foresees strong waves throughout the whole day today to stabilize once Christmas day begins.
