The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has put La Palma and the north of Tenerife on a yellow notice for coastal phenomena from 10:00 am this Friday until 11:59 pm. What no one had foreseen is that the bad state of the sea and the high tide would cause giant waves to enter the main avenue at 4 in the morning, taking everything away and causing significant damage.
As can be seen in a series of videos filmed by Andy Rivas, a resident of the town, the waves surpassed the road with total virulence, taking Garachicans by surprise, as they had not been alerted to this rise, as is customary in the town. For this reason, nothing could be avoided: neither the owners of the premises nor the owners of the cars parked on the road had time to remove their belongings. Umbrellas, chairs, tables … the waves washed away everything.
According to Aemet, the northwestern swell, around 4 meters, will slowly diminish at the end of the day. This is how Garachico woke up this December 24:
