The Our Lady of Los Remedios Parish in Buenavista del Norte has carried out a unique nativity scene using newspaper editions from NOTICE JOURNAL. The group made up of around 20 people, who could well have used any other material, wanted to make it out of newspaper because this is one of the means of communication of our society that enjoys being legendary and that still today, in the era digital, it is still maintained.
“It is significant, – the parish priest Don Roberto Darias Herrera tells us – that when the first stone is placed in a singular construction, in a monument that we want to last forever, current objects are deposited on its foundations, such as current currency, some document, some other characteristic object of the time, but what is never missing are the newspapers of that day. They are undoubtedly a representation of what we are, do and have. Surely we agree that sometimes it causes us to feel discouraged, sad and even helpless in the face of so much reality that overwhelms us. “
The technique that has been used has been mainly the origami, which is the art of folding paper, without using scissors or glue, thus obtaining figures of various shapes. Many of these figures could be considered true paper sculptures.
José and María, are wooden figures wanting to reflect, together with the blank letters, the divinity that differs from the newspapers. If you go a little closer to the stable, you will be able to appreciate a multitude of news and information, with which we feel identified. A reality in need of Salvation.
The palm tree, so typical of our vegetation, reminds us of the union between the Canary Islands and Israel, where they are also very common. With this we want to reflect that extension of salvation, a reality that is close to what we celebrate on January 6, the manifestation of God to all peoples.
We appreciate the work of crimping each of the elements, meticulously cut and folded paper, to form that large stem that ends in splendid leaves that seem to wait for a light breeze.
For the letters that give title to this Bethlehem, no newspaper has been used, since they are the word of God. That is why they have been drawn up in pure white, expressing that very thing: the divinity of the Word.
A very original portal where nothing is missing: a lantern that gives light to the stable, a manger that waits impassively for the birth of the next one and the newspaper shavings that may well be, the syrup for the Hope that is to come. They even have a QR code so that those who visit it can have more information about its preparation.
One more year, the Church invites us to contemplate the Nativity: a child wrapped in swaddling clothes, adored by angels, who is Our Salvation. And so, each one living that Salvation, becoming aware and not turning our back on it, let us leave this world better than how we have found it. and that on that day, the newspapers are echoed.
