The equality area of the Santa Cruz City Council wants to continue promoting diverse spaces in the municipality. For this reason, after the inauguration last week of the first LGTBI local in the municipality, baptized with the name of the activist Marcela Rodríguez, during 2022 he wants to take another step and have another diverse space in the city, this time outdoors, specifically next to the Tenerife Auditorium. “It is a small triangular-shaped space that is next to the San Francisco Battery, on municipal land, in which we want to install a structure that makes the LGTBI groups visible, which will be dressed with large works of urban art,” explained the Councilor for the area, Purificación Dávila. In addition, according to the mayor, “we will install a climbing wall at its base so that sports can also be practiced and not only be a space for recognition but also have a public utility with a meeting point for sports and leisure.”
This action is included within the budget that the Equality area will have in 2022, and which amounts to 500,000 euros, 3% more than in 2021. A second action in promoting diversity will be the organization of the Pink Festival, together with the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. “It is a festival in whose organization various areas will be involved, with the aim of raising awareness about diversity, and in which, for three weeks, there will be different activities such as theater, cinema, conferences, traveling exhibitions and some concerts,” he explained Dávila, who added that the intention is for it to be held in October.
As for the rest of the initiatives in the area, the Councilor for Human Resources also explained that the line of subsidies has been increased, reaching 150,000 euros, the Contest for Brief Women’s Stories is being maintained and work is already underway on the implementation of a protocol against Gender violence through the purple dots at the Santa Cruz Carnival. “In addition, we continue to provide training on equality to the Carnival groups and various groups and we maintain the only nominal subsidy that we have for the organization Mujeres Solidarias, which is in charge of managing an emergency floor for women in vulnerable situations,” concluded Dávila .
