In the Cabildo’s Budget for 2022, the island government directly allocates the 88% of almost 16 million euros to nine municipalities managed, alone or in coalition, by the PSOE, four by the Canary Coalition and one by the Popular Party. A fact described as “sectarian” and “unfair” by several mayors, among whom was not Daniel Díaz (Tacoronte), due to “pressure from Pedro Martín”, insular secretary general of the PSOE (his government partner) and president of the Cabildo. New Canary (NC), his party, ratified it yesterday and warned that “pressure is not the best instrument to add.”
The NC Coordinator in Tenerife, Valentín Correa, defends “autonomy” as one of the principles that governs the local Administration and “the interests of citizens” as a obligation of any mayor, “Beyond the colors and political pacts.” He maintains that the island needs projects of “relevance, with a depth of strategic investments and with a true insular vision, not as a way to finance municipal projects that obey programmed interests.” In his opinion, “the Cabildo and those responsible must win the trust of the rest of the institutions with deeds and not with words.”
Pedro Martin maintains that “never in history has political color been so equitably distributed or neglected as now” in the management of the Insular Corporation, despite the public rejection of the allocation of these funds expressed by the mayors José Manuel Bermúdez (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, CC), José Domingo Regalado (Granadilla de Abona, CC), Arturo González (San Miguel de Abona, CC), Emilio Navarro (Santiago del Teide, PP), Escolástico Gil (El Rosario, IR Los Verdes ) and Sebastián Martín (Arico, Primero Arico).
