During the general assembly of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), in his capacity as mayor Sebastián Martín requested “protection” before said body to whichand he urged “to mediate with the Cabildo de Tenerife” for the treatment that Arico is receiving from the island government. A mediation that the councilor considers necessary for the Island Corporation to resume compensation for the landfill, a measure paralyzed by the Administration chaired by Pedro Martín.

Sebastián Martín made this planning during an intervention in which the Ariquero alderman addressed a request to the Presidency of Fecam, which is managed by the mayor of Candelaria, Mía Concepción Brito. The Ariquero alderman proposed that he mediate in the dialogue between the City Council and the Tenerife Council “So that Arico receives just compensation for housing and receiving all the garbage on the island of Tenerife, a contribution that we have been demanding for almost a year.”

It so happens that the Canarian Federation of Municipalities, in a session held on March 10, 1999, and the Insular Council of Insular Administration of Territorial Administration, during the meeting held on December 13, 1999, they gave the reason to the Ariquero City Council “urging the search for legal solutions that allow the will to compensate the City of Arico to make a reality, due to the evident diseconomy that the current situation is representing them ». The mayor of Arico said that “22 years ago, the Fecam assembly ruled on the need for the municipality of Arico to be compensated for the diseconomy caused by land occupation and landfill activity.”

Along these lines, Sebastián Martín stressed that “many years have passed and the damage caused by the Environmental Complex has increased considerably as a result of the accumulation of waste. The impact is sustained and, for that reason, Ariqueros have the right to be compensated.

“We are going to grant a reasonable amount of time but if the process is prolonged, we will take measures”

Arico also requests the protection of Fecam before the Cabildo de Tenerife before the proposal – “a further lack of respect,” he said – of said Institution to install a plant to burn waste on a plot of the island landfill. «The City Council will not allow the incinerator to be implanted, opposition that has the support of all social groups and the municipal government, “added the Ariquero alderman.

An argument to which Martín Pérez adds “the end of the institutional consensus that historically existed in Tenerife by promoting the imbalance in the nominative subsidies of the Cabildo.” The mayor of Arico blames the government of the Cabildo for “breaking territorial cohesion with the direct allocation of island funds, something that until now was done with the consensus among municipalities and that now leads us to begging.”

Sebastián Martín Pérez advocates to continue working with the purpose of dialogue and negotiation with the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martin, and with the insular Institution, “despite the long period without response” to the requests made by the Ariquero City Council to discuss the demands of the municipality. “We are waiting for some steps to materialize aimed at holding a technical and political meeting in order to advance this negotiation. We are going to grant a reasonable period of time to this end, but if the process is prolonged, we will take measures, “said the mayor of Arico.

Martín hopes that the mediation of the Canarian Federation of Municipalities will be a decisive step and “will make it possible for the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife to sit down to negotiate with Arico.”
