The Governing Council of the Cabildo de La Palma has approved the agreement with the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), by which the Security and Emergencies area of the insular Institution allocates 50,000 euros to this entity for the optimization of the early warning system for volcanic surveillance on the island of La Palma.
The councilor responsible for the area, Nieves Rosa Arroyo, has highlighted the importance of this collaboration agreement with Involcán, which has become evident, more than ever, in this context of volcanic emergency, where the scientific community and, in particular, Researchers from the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands are a key element in guaranteeing people’s safety.
The agreement contemplates, among other objectives, operating and maintaining the permanent instrumental network made up of geochemical, geodetic and geophysical stations (recording in continuous mode) to strengthen the seismic-volcanic surveillance of La Palma. In addition to coordinating, organizing and programming activities aimed at strengthening education, training and public awareness of La Palma residents about the volcanic phenomenon and volcanic risk management. It also plans to promote geochemical, geodetic, geophysical and geological investigations that contribute to the reduction of volcanic risk on the island of La Palma.
Nieves Rosa Arroyo highlighted the close collaboration that the Cabildo de La Palma has maintained with Involcán, whose work on the Island dates back to 1997 to strengthen the early warning system for volcanic phenomena, which has increased during the volcanic emergency that it suffers. the island.
