Yes there are a municipality in Tenerife that stands out for the large number of nativity scenes it sets up at Christmas that’s La Orotava. Hence, the City Council reorganizes the route of the portals, which this year celebrates its fourteenth edition. It has become one of the most demanded activities on these dates by visitors and neighbors. The route is already a benchmark in the Canary Islands and makes the Villa is a must-see point to enjoy not only its heritage and its wide range of leisure and culture, but also to admire the beauty of these detailed works of art.
The realization of nativity scenes is a tradition of yesteryear, but in La Orotava it has been recovered admirably by creating this annual route, already established, in which about thirty nativity scenes participate each year. Thus, all the members of the Taoro association have made it possible that in addition to the projection of this art, this sign of the cultural and religious heritage is recovered. Behind every birth there are months of altruistic work. Due to the current health situation, Visits to participating nativity scenes will be carried out with capacity control and following health protocols.
This year, the association donated a nativity scene to the Church of San Francisco, where the patron saint of nativity scenes, San Francisco de Asís, is located, and at the same time the headquarters of the group. The donated sculptural ensemble is the work of the young sculptor and nativity scene artist Alejandro Hernández Pérez, and it is also the representative image in this edition, both in the brochures and on the posters. This year the face-to-face visit is combined with the virtual one. Thus, to visit them in situ, you can consult the program to find out the data of the different nativity scenes integrated into the route. This year, due to the health situation, school visits will not be allowed either, but they will be able to do so freely. Most are located in the urban center, but some are located in different neighborhoods of the municipality.
This year, as a novelty, Guided tours are offered at night, outside the usual hours. They will be on the 18th, 23rd and 29th of this month and on January 4. These routes are organized by the Sacred Museum of the La Concepción parish. What is collected will go to those affected by the La Palma volcano. The Taoro Villa de La Orotava nativity scene association was founded in 2008, it is made up of 60 members (individuals, associations and companies) and its objective is to rescue, care for and promote the tradition of setting up nativity scenes. In addition to the route, the association organizes various activities, such as workshops.
