The Association of Journalists of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (APT) presented this Thursday, December 9, the Yearbook of the Canary Islands 2019-2020, in an event that took place at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

It was attended by the counselor for Public Administrations, Justice and Security, Julio Pérez; the president of the APT, Salvador García Llanos; and the president of the Spanish Association of Vaccination, Amós García Rojas.

Amos García opened the event, which began by highlighting that “the media have played an important role in this pandemic, that of informing society,” even comparing this work with those other ‘weapons’ from the early days of the disease: social distance , masks, hand washing … “We are in a very important moment, with our country leading in vaccination, but at the same time we must reinforce the preventive message, which in recent times has relaxed somewhat,” he commented.
For his part, Salvador García began his speech by thanking the collaborating firms and sponsors for their contribution to the Canary Islands Yearbook. The president of the APT took advantage of the event to review important issues for the group experienced in recent months, such as the entry into operation of the new headquarters on San Francisco Street, as well as the beginning of the processing of the Law of creation of the Professional College.
In this line, García Llanos pointed out that the APT actively collaborates in the events of the centenary of CD Tenerife, as it has been doing with institutions such as the Canarian Academy of La Lengua and the University of La Laguna. Nor did he forget the recent award of the Patricio Estévanez award to Juan Carlos Carballo.
Salvador García lamented the destruction of employment and the precariousness of the same that is suffered in the profession. He also had a message for the colleagues who have been reporting for months on the La Palma volcano. “My encouragement and my appreciation,” he said.
The president then made a description of this eleventh edition of the yearbook published by the APT, which has been sponsored, since its inception in 2005, by the Government of the Canary Islands and which on this occasion has the participation of 131 firms (among journalists, specialists in the subjects dealt with and public authorities), which offer a retrospective vision divided into eight sections: Health challenge, Life in the pandemic, Canary Islands, Economy, Society, Media, Sports and People.
The work also has the patronage of the Canary Islands Parliament, the Canary Islands Transparency Commission, the Tenerife Council, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the Hospiten group, in addition to the support of other public institutions and private companies.
This yearbook is the largest of those published in Spain by journalists’ associations or colleges and offers, over almost 400 pages and 150 articles, a retrospective view of the most outstanding events that occurred in the years to which each journal dedicates edition. In addition, on this occasion, the publication includes a Covid-19 dossier (which opens the development of the contents) with different articles referring to the pandemic.
The Yearbook of the Canary Islands 2019-2020 is also accompanied by an exhaustive compilation of headlines from the four newspapers published in the Archipelago during the years 2018, 2019 and 2020 that, as an appendix, allows a summary of the facts that they dominated the foreground of the present time of our autonomous community.
The event was closed by Julio Pérez, who with the Yearbook in his hands spoke of the “great effort” behind such a publication, then applauding the contribution to the knowledge of the Canary Islands that it represents. “Knowledge must illuminate the authorities in decision-making. In the Canary Islands we have great professionals among public employees and that is a treasure as has been demonstrated by the pandemic and the La Palma volcano ”.
“The current moment represents a great opportunity for journalism, so that it recovers the importance of what has been confirmed. The journalist knows how to contrast, although this exercise today is difficult. One of the elements of the democratic quality of a country is to have good journalism, “he concluded.
